Distinguished and Famous people from Yarra Glen

🌾 The Bell family

Agnes and William Bell, Scottish immigrants, began farming at Gulf Station in the 1850s. Their family remained associated with the property for about a century, building the timber farm complex using local materials and practical construction methods. A later family matriarch, Mary Anne Bell, continued running the farm after her husband died. The Bells prospered supplying food during the gold rushes, and hospitality was taken seriously: the National Trust records that guests left with a hamper of farm produce. It is a pleasingly substantial form of farewell. The surviving buildings preserve the working world behind that generosity, from food production to household life.

🏉 Jason Ball

Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball helped make a country football ground part of a national conversation about inclusion. After coming out publicly in 2012, he campaigned against homophobia in sport and initiated the Pride Cup, bringing that campaign into a local match. His Yarra Glen teammates also joined him at Melbourne’s Pride March. A University of Melbourne Arts graduate, Ball became a Beyond Blue ambassador and was named Victoria’s Young Australian of the Year for 2017. His advocacy grew from the everyday question of whether a player could feel welcome among teammates, and reached sporting clubs, schools and workplaces around Australia.

🧭 Robert Hoddle

Surveyor Robert Hoddle passed through the Yarra Glen area in 1838 while investigating the country towards the headwaters of the Yarra. His party approached from the north, travelling through Kangaroo Ground and Christmas Hills. Yarra Ranges Council records his use of Billanook, a name belonging to the region’s Wurundjeri people. This was an expedition through already known and inhabited Country. Hoddle’s local connection is therefore a documented surveying journey, part of the colonial mapping of the valley, rather than residence in the later township. The route also places Yarra Glen within an early overland approach to the river.
